Transitioning back to school after a break can be a challenging time for students, especially autistic children. Getting back into the routine of classes, homework, and extracurricular activities can be challenging, but with the right approach and tools, the transition can be smooth and successful. Here are some tips to help students ease back into the school year:
1. Start talk to your child about changes from last year: Talk about who their new teacher will be and how their classroom will be different. Ask their teacher for a rough schedule of their days so they have an idea of what they are heading into.
Tip: create a social story to start reading.
2. Establish a routine school begins: Start getting back into a regular sleep schedule and set a routine for the morning and evening. Going to bed and waking up at consistent times can help regulate your body clock.
Tip: use a visual schedule, especially for their mornings.
3. Get sensory tools ready: To help your child stay regulated through the changes and transitions, make sure they have the tools they love to help. Things to try: compression shirt, fidgets, chewies, headphones, sound-reducing hoodie, special interest/ comfort items, and sensory-friendly clothing.
Tip: try out all sensory tools at home first so they are comfortable with how they feel and how to use them.
Reach out to your child's teacher or admin to get pictures of the school and classroom to include in your visuals and help ease your child's anxiety.
