1. Transitions are tough, especially for kids with sensory sensitivities

Make mornings smoother with:

  • An earlier wake up time: rushing and being stressed about being late only adds to overstimulation and anxiety. Slow it down and leave plenty of time!
  • Use a visual schedule for the morning and whole day: work through each task with visuals to help break it down and reduce frustration. Go over the schedule for the day to reduce anxiety about what is to come.
  • Sensory activities: help them start the day as regulated as possible. From swinging to heavy work to squeezes and compression, there is a lot that can be done at home to help them start the day off right.
  • Supportive sensory tools & clothing: ensure they have the tools they need to succeed right on them from the bus or drive to school to learning in the classroom and beyond!

2. Sensory-friendly clothing can help reduce meltdowns, anxiety, & overwhelm

Dysregulating and painful clothing can lower their tolerance for other sensory experiences (demands, lights, noises, etc)

  • Painful tags and bothersome seams
  • Restrictive or rough feeling fabric
  • Irritating metal details (zippers, snaps, etc.)
  • Frustrating designs that impede independence
